This residential garden located in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Annapolis and is within the National Register Historic District. The house is set on a quiet block of Murray Hill, a traditional walkable neighborhood built in the 1920’s and 1930’s between Church Circle and Spa Creek.

The front garden is dominated by a mature Sycamore Tree (planted in 1969) and a large Pin Oak Tree which together create a high overhead canopy  providing shade to offset the summer heat. The perennials and groundcovers are predominantly evergreen and have a naturalized woodland character.  Helleborus orientalis, Epimedium ‘Roseum’, Lamiastrum, Liriope, and Vinca major Variegata have been encouraged to mix creating a natural character.

In the rear, the garden is predominately sunny.  A small courtyard nestled between the garage, the screened porch and the house transitions to the larger rear yard which is a simple lawn surrounded by a brick garden edge and planted border. The standout feature in the rear garden is the hedge that has a topiary window cut into it allowing for casual conversations with the neighbors.  A large Lunaform urn set on a custom granite plinth provides a focal point in the center of the garden perennial border with larger evergreen shrubs and trees providing privacy. A masonry ‘rug’ for under the picnic table is crafted with a detailed paving pattern of brick and bluestone.  The fence along the driveway and in the back garden are white large scale lattice providing structure for climbing roses.

A green roof on the third-floor level connects the office spaces with a modular wood deck.
